Carbon Bike Wheels are lighter, stronger and therefore faster than road bike wheels made from other materials. Carbon fibre is the material of choice for the rim and certain areas of the hubs. I prefer the use of Titanium for the spokes for reasons explained in a separate post.
Carbon Bike Wheels constructed with premium components including carbon fibre rims can be both light weight and aerodynamic. Uccello Carbon rim sections are aero-optimised in cross section. The rim depth is now the major consideration when making a wheel choice.
At Uccello Cycles we have settled on three principal combinations of rim dimensions. For Climbing optimised wheels we recommend 30mm depth rims front and rear. This choice minimises the weight whilst still retaining very good aero properties.
Riders who participate in long Gran Fondo events in hilly to mountainous terrain are best served with our Gran Fondo wheel set. With 40mm front and 45mm rear rim profiles, these wheels sets are still comfortably less than 1200grams. Perfect for climbing, they have excellent aero properties and are not effected by cross winds.
Road Racers and Criterium riders would most likely choose the “Road Race’ wheel set. The 45mm front and 55mm rear rim profiles optimise the aero properties and are still well below 1300grams for the wheel set. The 55mm deep rear rim makes for a very stiff wheel, perfect for acceleration and the final sprint.
