My Story
Why I Know What It Takes
I am a Qualified Bicycle Mechanic and very enthusiastic road rider who likes to ride in the longer mass participation or ‘Gran Fondo’ events.
Since the start of 2014, I have started (and finished) 21 ‘Gran Fondo’ events longer than 120km.
They were:
Peaks Challenge, Falls Creek. 2014, ’15, ’16, ’17, ’18, ’19, ’20 and 2024.
Peaks Challenge, Cradle Mountain. 2016 and 2017.
Peaks Challenge, Gold Coast. 2016.
Thus completing the ‘Peaks Elite’ series in 2016. Yes that is 11 events all longer than 235km and with more than 4000m of climbing.
In addition I have completed the Audax Alpine Classic Extreme 250 in 2015 and 2016.
Amy’s Gran Fondo in 2017 and 2019. Qualifying on both occasions for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, which I attended in Varese, Italy in 2018.
I also completed the Bicycling Australia Bowral Classic in 2019, 2021 and 2023. The Noosa Classic in 2019 and the Mudgee Classic in 2022.
With this experience using a variety of equipment, I have been able to make some well considered conclusions about what it takes for success.
To do well you need a light weight aero road bike which fits you well, is geared for the expected terrain and is equipped with a great wheel set.
I have ridden these events on all sorts of wheels ranging from entry level alloy box rims to deep section carbon clinchers and mid section carbon tubulars.
With this experience in mind, I have searched the world for the best components I can find to build my wheel sets. They are very light, stiff and strong; and have very good aero properties particularly in turbulent cross wind conditions.
I ride and race on the wheels I build.
Happy Riding.
